Jota’s post-Celtic frustration continues as surprise Rennes stance adopted ahead of January window

Celtic icons of the past always create plenty of intrigue after they leave to go on and forge their career path elsewhere and Jota is certainly someone who falls into that category.

In two years at Parkhead, the Portuguese winger cemented himself as a fan favourite, registering 28 goals and 26 assists in 83 appearances across all competitions.

Nevertheless, his brilliant time in Glasgow came to an end in 2023 as Jota completed a £25 million move from Celtic to join Al-Ittihad, making him the club’s second-most expensive sale of all-time.

Unfortunately, the 25-year-old didn’t enjoy fond memories of Saudi Arabia, scoring five times in 25 outings before Rennes snapped Jota up for €8 million during the summer.

Despite optimism his post-Celtic career would kick on, the Benfica youth graduate looks to have encountered another difficult situation in a new environment.

Celtic icon Jota could leave Rennes in January

According to a report from L’Equipe, former Celtic winger Jota may be on the move again in January after finding it hard to establish himself since moving to Rennes.

The tricky winger has made just nine appearances since swapping Saudi Arabia for France, scoring once against Stade Brestois back in October.

In light of his misfortune, the outlet notes that nothing is off the table as Jorge Sampoili looks to streamline a front four that has become littered with options.

There is no mention of potential suitors for Jota, though he is unlikely to be short of admirers once the January window opens for business.

Could Celtic be tempted if Jota becomes available

The notion of Jota returning to Celtic is an age-old question that appears to arise every window, and supporters do know that the club are in the market for a winger in January.

James Forrest has been ruled out for six weeks due to injury, which may accelerate that chase, but there have already been reports pouring in surrounding potential targets.

Celtic have Sarpsborg winger Sondre Ørjasæter on their radar, while Royal Antwerp star Michel Ange-Balikwisha is also admired by the Bhoys after recovering from injury.

Whether Jota is attainable or not for Celtis is up for debate. Regardless, supporters have a love affair with the silky star that will last the test of time.
