Kasper Schmeichel says his “phone has been on fire” since he shared the devastating news about his injury.

The Celtic goalkeeper had been absent from the squad for a few weeks amid ambiguity over his fitness situation. He had been out of the squad since a 2-1 home defeat to Hibs.

Schmeichel then told Danish media that he had been told to take a 4-6 week break by specialists, but by the time he was appearing on CBS Sports Golazo this week, his prognosis was significantly worse.

Reactions have been triggered throughout the football world since he made the profound admission that he may have played his last football game. He responded to the reactions on Wednesday.

“So I think it was just good to get it out there, I have had a great reaction. I will get back to everyone as my phone has been on fire.”

On the same channel the day before, Schmeichel had revealed: “I could’ve potentially played my last football game.

“I’ve been a footballer since the day I was born. It’s devastating. It’s very, very hard to wrap my head around at the moment.

“I got the message [on Tuesday] that it could potentially be the end of my career. By the time I could get back fit I could be plus 40.

“I’m going to give it everything I can to see if I can get back. It would be probably one of the greatest feats of my career if I could ever get back from an injury like this.

“I’m going to fight, I’m going to try everything I can. I’m going to do the rehab.”

Schmeichel’s Celtic contract expires in a few months. He had been hoping to make it to the World Cup, but now won’t be involved in their crucial qualifying play-offs later this month.

Kasper Schmeichel at Celtic: how one injury changes everything

Schmeichel had initially been an extremely successful Celtic signing.

He helped the Hoops win the League Cup and qualify for the Champions League knockout stage in his first six months, appearing an upgrade on Joe Hart.

But the damage sustained to his shoulder on that night playing for Denmark against Portugal last year completely halted his trajectory. Rushed back to action for the Scottish Cup final against Aberdeen, he cost Celtic the game with a fatal error.

This season, after a positive start, the shoulder problem increasingly became the elephant in the room as opposing attackers increasingly found joy by targeting Schmeichel’s right side.

Viljami Sinisalo has auditioned well for the number-one jersey so far in his absence.
