Celtic have a lot of balls in the air right now, and one of them will be Kasper Schmeichel’s contract.

The big Denmark international is out of contract at the end of this season and while there appears to be no rush right now by Schmeichel to renew, Celtic will need to start thinking about this.

The veteran goalkeeper has been pivotal to Celtic’s domestic and European successes over the last two seasons after Schmeichel took over the gloves from Hoops hero Joe Hart.

However, with his Celtic contract set to expire at the end of this season, Schmeichel has opened up on an ‘agreement’ he has with the Parkhead club as he drops a timeline on when he expects talks about his future at the Bhoys to commence.

Kasper Schmeichel says Celtic contract talks will happen ‘quietly’

The Celtic goalkeeping position is one of the most important in the team as the disastrous signing of Vasilis Barkas proved back in 2020.

And with Schmeichel’s contract running down, Celtic cannot get his successor wrong should they decide not to extend it.

So when will Celtic supporters find out if Schmeichel stays or goes? The big stopper reveals all.

Schmeichel told the Daily Record, “The club has bigger things to think about than my contract right now.

“We have always had an agreement that we will talk about the future quietly in February or March. We have to see where we stand by then. Right now we have a special situation at the club, so my focus is not on my contract at all.

Poll: Which position do Celtic need to strengthen in the 2026 January transfer window?

“It has become so in the world of football that as soon as you are 28 years old, you are old – and then suddenly I am far, far too old.

“As soon as there is a three-digit number in front of the age, no one will make a contract longer than six months into the future.”

Kasper Schmeichel’s goalkeeping record compared to Leicester City

Schmeichel has been successful at almost every club he has been at, including Celtic.

The big goalkeeper has won the English Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield at Leicester as well as a league title, a Scottish Cup and a League Cup at Celtic.

So how does his goalkeeping record at both clubs compare?

At 39, Schmeichel will be thinking about retirement and possibly going into a coaching role so these talks could be pivotal in deciding his immediate Celtic future.
