Kenny Dalglish reckons Michael Beale’s failure to win derby matches is ultimately what cost him his job and has warned any new manager at Rangers that it’ll take ‘something special’ to overcome Celtic.
The Bhoys’ rivals are looking for a new boss after Beale was sacked last week and are thought to be speaking to a number of contenders over the coming week.
Steven Davis is currently in interim charge, supported by Alex Rae, but the Ibrox side suffered an embarrassing European result mid-week and he’s unlikely to be in place for too much longer.
The reality for anyone arriving in Govan is that they are always measured against Celtic and that’s why Dalglish reckons it’ll be difficult for whoever is given the job.
He said [Sunday Post, 08/10 print edition]: “They won just about every game in the league under Michael, but just couldn’t beat Celtic when it mattered. That proved to be very costly.”
The Celtic legend later continued: “Overall, it’s a massive job and Rangers will need to hope the new fellow can handle everything that comes with being their manager.
“Delivering success is the be all and end all and it’s a tough ask to overcome Celtic. But that is what it comes down to. The Parkhead club are champions and are strong on and off the park. It will take something very special to knock them off their perch.”
With Celtic already seven points ahead, getting key players back to fitness and improving all the time under Brendan Rodgers – it seems like any new manager will need to be a miracle worker to push the Bhoys off course.

That’s before you even consider the massive difference in resources from transfer window to transfer window right now.
The question some Rangers fans might be asking themselves is, who would even want the job in that context?
We’ll find out soon enough. Whoever takes charge, Celtic have it in their power to ensure he goes the way of the rest who rock up in Glasgow.
