Celtic legend Kenny Dalglish has lauded the club’s move to tie down captain Callum McGregor for five more years in the Hoops.

McGregor’s new deal was announced last Monday and has been warmly received by the vast majority of the Celtic support. We’re keeping a player in his prime and utilising the years of experience he’s accrued as a leader at the Bhoys.

For Dalglish, it’s a move that will be of most value to new manager Brendan Rodgers. The iconic former Scotland international reckons you can’t buy what he offers – trust.

Writing in his Sunday Post column [16/07 print edition], Dalglish said: “He is the club captain and has led by example in his two years in that role. Callum has been exception for the Parkhead team and Brendan Rodgers must be delighted to be working with him again.

“Brendan knows he can trust Callun on and off the park. That is the kind of scenario every manager dreams of. That kind of leadership is sought after by every manager in the game but only a few are lucky enough to get it. Callum will be looking to lead Celtic to more success this season.”

McGregor was always going to be one of the most important figures at the entire club this summer. Regardless of who replaced Ange Postecoglou, the Scotland international was going to be absolutely key in transitioning to a new era.

That’s been made a little easier considering Rodgers is returning, but McGregor nonetheless sets the standards that his teammates aspire to.

Retaining his talent, personality, experience and future determination to bring success to Celtic will be one of the best bits of business that the Bhoys do this summer, make no mistake.
