You’d have been forgiven for thinking that hiring Ange Postecoglou for Celtic was a Dom McKay enterprise.

After all, McKay essentially said as much when the pair were unveiled to the media together [67 Hail Hail/YouTube]. McKay was beaming with pride at “his man”, stolen away from Yokohama F Marinos in the J League.

Except – nah. Not so much, according to Celtic chairman Ian Bankier. In a short tribute to former CEO Peter Lawwell [Celtic FC], the chairman, who had a torrid day, let slip a crucial detail of the Ange Postecoglou hire.

Bankier said [Celtic FC]:

“I have to pay tribute to Peter [Lawell], to his contribution to the club over so many years. It’s been absolutely massive. He retired with great dignity at the end of last year, he was instrumental in the identification and appointment of Ange.

“And he did everything properly and professionally for us. [He] has put his heart and soul into what’s best for Celtic.”

What did Dom McKay do at Celtic? Clearly, the Ange Postecoglou hire was agreed without much of his say

It’s hard not to feel sorry for Dom McKay. He promised so much, and sounded genuinely enthusiastic to drag Celtic into this century. Ange Postecoglou, a forward-thinking international coach seemed to chime with his message of modernisation.

Except, it was allegedly Peter Lawwell who was behind it. Ah, but what about transfers? Surely Dom McKay was a driving force behind the club’s summer recruitment?

Well, no. Not really. Acting CEO Michael Nicholson was working with Ange Postecoglou on transfers.

So, what did Dom McKay do in his brief spell at Celtic? He could’ve really been given this one. Bankier didn’t have to grass on him in such an indirect way.

Lawwell had enough achievements to look back on. McKay could really have just taken this one popular decision for his CV. By all accounts, he is a pleasant, hard-working and polite man. Just give him this.

Instead, Lawwell’s influence has continued into this season. It’d be fascinating to know how Postecoglou’s name came about, whether Lawwell was in the discussions and how aggressively the former CEO recruited Big Ange.

Maybe Bankier will divulge more in the future. Or Ange will. Alternatively, we’ll just never know. But it wasn’t a Dom McKay call.
