Kieran Tierney fitness situation revealed by Scotland teammate with Brendan Rodgers on red alert

Kieran Tierney’s fitness has been a talking point since his Celtic return.

The left-back has been unable to complete 90 minutes for Brendan Rodgers since making his move back to Celtic Park, despite completing a full pre-season.

During the Hoops’ friendlies, £250k signing Hayato Inamura deputised as Tierney’s backup, despite mostly playing as a centre-back in his homeland.

Celtic’s signing of Marcelo Saracchi has increased Rodgers’ options in that position, but the academy hero is still the clear favourite given his Premier League pedigree.

This makes Tierney’s withdrawal from the Scotland squad a concern for Hoops fans, given the possibility of a recurring injury. One of his Scotland teammates has given an update to the media.

Kieran Tierney has a contact injury, says Andy Robertson

Andy Robertson’s relationship with Tierney in the Scotland squad has often been a subject of debate, given that they play in the same position for their clubs.

Under Gordon Strachan, the Liverpool man forced Tierney out to right-back. Under Steve Clarke however, a flexible system has allowed both players to operate on their preferred left side.

Speaking on Tierney’s unavailability in the upcoming fixtures, Robertson said: “It’s just unfortunate that he’s turned up for the camp, had a scan and it has ruled him out for both games.

“It’s disappointing for him and the squad because he’s grown into a massive part of our team. He’s getting closer. This is a contact injury so it’s not like he’s had a setback.

“He’s just been in Kazakhstan and played in an Old Firm game – and we know how tasty those games are. The timing is unfortunate but it won’t set him back for too long and hopefully in October he’ll be back in a Scotland jersey.”

Given Tierney’s importance to both club and country, let’s hope that Robertson is correct.

Could Celtic end up with the same selection headache as Scotland?

It’s no secret that Andy Robertson is a lifelong Celtic fan, and with such an impressive career to date, the question will remain over whether he will complete his dream of playing for the Hoops.

Just like the Tierney situation last season, Robertson is now in the final year of his contract, making his signing much more achievable for Rodgers.

But what would the squad situation look like at Celtic? Would they have to adopt a similar situation to Clarke’s? Would one of the pair have to play out of position?

It remains to be seen whether the move is on the radar next summer. But if Robertson is as desperate to wear the hoops as Tierney, it may be a conversation we are having again.
