Kris Boyd admits he knew the ‘defining moment’ Rangers blew the title to Celtic

Discussion around Celtic’s ability to retain the Scottish Premiership took a turn in December when two losses to Hearts and Kilmarnock allowed Rangers to get back into it.

Ever since then the narrative that has been spun in the media was all about how good Philippe Clement was doing and how poorly the Celtic team were playing.

Both statements were true but many had the title race all but over after Brendan Rodgers‘ team toiled for a few weeks and the media fawning over Rangers was pretty embarrassing to be honest.

Fast forward to April and after Rangers’ slip-ups against Ross County and Dundee and Rodgers having most of his injured players back, Celtic sit pretty at the top of the league with a three-point gap with just five games to go.

Kris Boyd makes Celtic league title admission

With league business about to resume this Sunday, former Rangers striker and now Sky Sports pundit, Kris Boyd, has admitted that he knew the exact moment that his old club blew the league title and practically handed it to Celtic.

Boyd said [Daily Record print edition page 50], “Some clubs get bogged down by winning cups but Rangers are going to be judged by winning titles.

“The fans have got themselves into a position where they could have won the league but, with the last three games, Rangers could potentially have thrown a golden opportunity away.

“It’s not over but it’s going to be very difficult. The last couple of weeks, you’re going to look back on that period and say it’s been the defining moment.

“Forget the start, the manager lost his job, Clement came in and transformed the club. But you can’t just look at it and say, ‘We’ve got ourselves into a title race’ – you’ve got to go and win it.”

Now let’s get one thing straight. The reason there is a title race is because Celtic’s injuries caused a drop in form which allowed Rangers to get back into it.

Hard work and graft have kept Celtic close at the top of the table and whilst nothing is decided yet, the momentum is with Rodgers and his team now that he almost has a full quota of players to choose from.

With Dundee away facing Celtic and Rangers heading to an in-form St Mirren, this Sunday could prove to hold more twists and turns as the title race heads to it’s conclusion.
