Celtic ‘narrative’ rubbished as Neil Lennon points out a simple Rangers truth

Brendan Rodgers was very vocal over the weekend in hitting back at Celtic’s critics with a brilliant post-match interview after the win against St Mirren.

Rodgers has come in for a lot of criticism this season as Celtic struggle to break down teams and find their creative edge.

Coupled with the recent chat surrounding Celtic’s transfer business the feeling in the Scottish press is that there is trouble at Celtic and with the first-team.

Rodgers moved quickly to dismiss that after the win in Paisley and said that the team are together despite the negative headlines surrounding the club.

Neil Lennon has also hit back at the negativity surrounding Celtic. The former Hoops boss admits the team should be criticised for their performances but has taken umbrage at the suggestion that somehow Rangers are performing better whilst his old club toils.

Lennon said [PLZ Soccer], “Everyone is saying how Rangers are grinding out results but Celtic have won eight and drew one of their last nine games.

“That’s pretty impressive, but they are the ones who are getting all the criticism. Brendan is quite rightly getting criticised because the performances aren’t at the level that we expect them to be.

“However this is a new team with a new coach and they are still winning games. But the narrative is that ‘Celtic are struggling and Rangers are doing really well’.

“You can understand why Brendan has got a bit spiky about it. The narrative is that everything is great on one side of the fence but not the other, even though the results have been the same.”

Personally, I think most of this criticism has come because Celtic have gone from a position of complete domination to allowing the Ibrox club to get within touching distance in the title race.

Back-to-back defeats against Kilmarnock and Hearts and struggling against the likes of Ross County and Motherwell have opened up Celtic to huge amounts of criticism.

Whilst the results have been there, the performances have not. The St Mirren performance looks like it could be a turning point for Celtic and the fans will be hoping that continues on Saturday as Derek McInnes’ Kilmarnock comes visiting.
