Kris Boyd calls Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers’ Honda Civic comments ’embarrassing’

Brendan Rodgers has nailed his colours to the mast with his comments this week.

The Celtic boss watched his side put in a desperately poor performance in their 2-0 defeat to Dundee at Dens Park.

The result left the Hoops five points adrift at the top of the Scottish Premiership, with Derek McInnes’ Hearts at the top of the table.

After the full time whistle, Rodgers said that he couldn’t be expected to drive like a Ferrari having been given the keys to a Honda Civic.

The comments were clearly a complaint from Rodgers towards the squad available to him, after a disappointing transfer window.

But for Kris Boyd, the comments were a deflection of the blame away from the Parkhead boss.

Celtic lost the game 2-0, having fallen two goals behind in the first half and shown no signs of mounting a serious comeback after the break.

Despite the absence of Alistair Johnston and Daizen Maeda, Rodgers’ squad had more than enough to beat a Dundee side who have endured a tough start to the season.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun, Boyd slated Rodgers’ comments, in his typically all-over-the-place fashion.

He said: “He spoke to us before he went and spoke to the media, so we didn’t get any time to react to when he said about the Honda Civic and the Ferrari.

“It’s embarrassing, really. It’s somebody who has got the cheek to throw his players under the bus like that. I said it yesterday that the protests that keep going on about the board, and everybody’s going on about the hierarchy.

“But when are people going to start asking the question about Brendan Rodgers? This thing about not being able to bring in players – Daizen Maeda was Celtic’s player of the year last year.

“He had a few games through the middle, but most of it was off that left side. Celtic have then went and recruited two left wingers, and where are they going to play?

“The Celtic board get the blame for every transfer that’s made. Brendan Rodgers has got the final say on every player that comes in to Celtic Park.

“So to then throw them all under the bus after a defeat to Dundee – I can’t help but think that Brendan Rodgers is just starting the similarities to when he left last time.”

Huge week ahead for Celtic

Every week is important at a big club, but the upcoming one feels especially crucial for the Hoops.

A 1-1 draw with Red Star and 2-0 defeat to Braga have the Hoops on just one point in the Europa League. Given the fixtures ahead, a win against Sturm Graz on Thursday feels essential.

After that, it’s a top-of-the-table clash with high-flying Hearts who have won seven and drawn one of their first eight fixtures.

The game at Tynecastle will be one of the most anticipated Scottish matches in a while. If the Hoops are to pick up two wins this week, it could signal a huge turning point.
