Kris Boyd and Chris Sutton on if Rangers will challenge Celtic next season, with ‘pathetic’ jibe

It’s normal service in Scotland following the conclusion of the 2024/25 Premiership season.

Brendan Rodgers had a cigar in hand as Celtic won their 55th title, including their fourth in a row, and their 14th in the last 15 seasons.

The only cheers from Rangers were their recent Glasgow derby wins over Celtic, including at Ibrox and Parkhead after the turn of the year.

But, other than that, Celtic wiped the floor with their rivals, claiming their crown with a 17-point margin, despite losing two derby matches.

It further proves the mental strength of those in green and white, but what will happen next season?

Kris Boyd on whether Rangers can challenge Celtic for the Premiership title next season

One man who has seen Celtic’s dominance this season has been Kris Boyd, whilst sitting in his punditry chair for Sky Sports.

The former striker, speaking on The Warm Up, mentioned Rangers’ wins over Celtic this term, and how that isn’t the issue with the club.

Boyd does feel Rangers can put out a challenge next season, after not even getting close to Scotland’s most successful club this time around.

“I think Rangers can challenge next season,” said Boyd. “Against Celtic, they have shown that they can compete again.

“Let’s be realistic, even if Rangers didn’t sign any players, they should be beating the rest. The wage budget and bill must be sky-high compared to the rest. They have found a level against Celtic where they can get performances and results.

“Whether it’s the players’ attitude, I don’t know. Whether they think they are better than what they are, I don’t know.”

Chris Sutton’s ‘pathetic’ jibe at Rangers after Celtic win title

Chris Sutton has mentioned that a lot could happen over the summer, from who will be Rangers’ next manager, to who will leave and sign for the champions, that could and will affect next season.

But, in his usual, typical way, Sutton couldn’t help but throw some punches at Rangers, including how they produced a ‘pathetic’ so-called title challenge this term.

However, going by the ‘law of averages’, Sutton thinks that things are bound to change sooner rather than later, regarding a title challenge.

“17 points the gap, that’s ridiculous, that’s a scandal,” said Sutton. “Of course, the gap can be cut. Can they challenge?

“Many things can happen in the summer. We don’t know. What’s going to happen at Rangers? We don’t know who Celtic may lose, in terms of playing personnel and who they are going to bring in.

“There will be a challenge. It’s a law of averages. There will be a challenge, eventually, from them.

“This last season was one of the most pathetic challenges from Rangers – Rangers need to, somehow, get back to running Celtic closer. I think they can, and they should do.”
