Kris Boyd points towards Celtic’s success as he dreams ahead of Rangers appointing Derek McInnes

It looks like there is going to be more change across the road from Celtic.

Despite Celtic shooting themselves in the foot again and again last season, Martin O’Neill still guided the club to a double, while Rangers went trophyless.

The Gers started the campaign with Russell Martin in the dugout, ended it with Dann Rohl, but he is jumping ship to join RB Salzburg in Austria.

With Rangers set to appoint Derek McInnes from Hearts, Kris Boyd feels the possible appointment is extra special because of his ‘connection’ with the club, as he highlighted Celtic’s success under managers who have ‘known the club.’

“When you take into consideration the managers who have had the most success with Celtic,” said Boyd. “They have had a connection with them since they were young.

“They have known the football club. When you think of Neil Lennon, Martin O’Neill and Brendan Rodgers in recent times. They have all known the football club.”

Should Celtic fans be delighted Rangers are turning to Derek McInnes?

Or are we underestimating him?

Kris Boyd uses Celtic example as Derek McInnes closes in on Rangers manager’s job

Over the years, Rangers have tried everything they could to try and dethrone Celtic, but they have failed for the most part.

Boyd pointed towards Rangers’ past investment, including spending ‘£40 million’ last summer, only to finish third in the Premiership.

Speaking on The Warm-Up, the ex-Scotland striker insisted his former club have no right to complain about a lack of board backing in their past efforts to ‘catch’ Celtic.

With the same old problems rearing their ugly head once again, he is dreaming that bringing McInnes to Ibrox might finally change the narrative.

Boyd: “For me, I think it would be a good appointment.”

Chris Sutton: “Does him being Scottish, does him having the connection with Rangers previously, everyone knows about that connection.

“How do you view that? Does that matter?”

Boyd: “Yeah, I think it does. The reason I say it does, you only need to look across the city. When you take into consideration the managers who have had the most success with Celtic, they have had a connection with them since they were young.

“They have known the football club. When you think of Neil Lennon, Martin O’Neill and Brendan Rodgers in recent times. They have all known the football club.

“Yes, Rangers have tried their best. I think every owner has spent money to try and catch Celtic. You only need to look at last season, where £40-odd million was spent. Go back to the previous owners as well. They have spent money, and it didn’t help.

“Nobody can say they didn’t try their best to invest in the squad to try and help the managers to catch Celtic.”

Celtic’s trophy success under Neil Lennon, Brendan Rodgers and Martin O’Neill

Whether as former players, managers, or boyhood fans, the Celtic Park faithful have been blessed to witness countless trophies lifted over the years.

Neil Lennon, Brendan Rodgers and Martin O’Neill have one thing in common: They all returned for a second spell and still lifted trophies.

Expanding on Boyd’s point regarding the ‘connection,’ it’s worth noting that since Lennon first took the managerial reins in 2010, Celtic have accumulated trophies at a pace never before seen in the Scottish game.
