Kris Commons slams Celtic boardroom silence and sends warning about next season

Former Celtic attacking midfielder Kris Commons has criticised the club for staying silent in the wake of Neil Lennon’s departure.

John Kennedy has taken interim charge of the team, but there’s been little communication from the leadership at the club.

Chairman Ian Bankier, CEO Peter Lawwell and prominent shareholder Dermot Desmond have all been silent on the future.

With Kennedy leading the bookmakers’ favourites list, supporters are concerned about who the manager will be next season.

Commons isn’t happy with the situation and has written off Kennedy’s chances of getting the job.

Speaking to The Scottish Daily Mail (08/03 print edition, Verdict supplement page 3), he said: “It’s nearly a fortnight since Neil Lennon left Celtic. Yet we still don’t know who the next permanent manager might be. The silence from the boardroom is deafening.

“Fans haven’t heard a peep from Dermot Desmond about how the club gets out of this mess. But one thing’s for sure. We can now say with some certainty that the next manager definitely won’t be John Kennedy.”

Commons would continue: “The rebuild has to start now. In fact, it should already be underway. The longer Celtic sit twiddling their thumbs, the more they risk being behind the eight-ball by the time next season comes around — and handing Rangers an advantage right from the start.”

Kris Commons has had his run-ins with Celtic supporters this season but he’s right here

Commons has hardly been the most popular pundit over the last couple of seasons, but I can’t really fault his analysis here.

Celtic have alienated supporters throughout this season and they’re now asking us to place a trust in them that hasn’t really been earned.

Season ticket holders and other fans are expected to believe they are conducting the recruitment searches needed to bring renewed success to Celtic Park.

A bit of leadership wouldn’t go amiss. We should be hearing from Lawwell or other board members acknowledging the failure this season. We should be given an indication that the club are looking for an outside candidate for the permanent Celtic job.

The longer the silence goes on, the more that concerns will grow and make it harder to sell supporters on the future of the club. Celtic need to take control of the narrative.

In other news, John Kennedy has warned against panicking in the wake of title defeat.
