Former Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty ‘wouldn’t be shocked’ if Rangers won the Scottish Premiership this season under Steven Gerrard.
Rangers appointed Russell Martin as boss in June after Barry Ferguson’s interim spell and the sacking of Philippe Clement in February.
But Martin was a complete disaster as he won just five of his 17 games in charge, with the Light Blues handing him his P45 after a 1-1 draw against Falkirk.
Steven Gerrard is now the clear favourite to replace Martin and return to the position he held between May 2018 and November 2021.
Gerrard and Rangers are currently in talks over a deal and that has Lafferty thinking the completely unthinkable involving Celtic.

Lafferty’s ridiculous claim about Steven Gerrard
Lafferty, who enjoyed two spells at Rangers, thinks Gerrard won’t settle for finishing behind current Premiership leaders Hearts and rivals Celtic.
He will set out to win the league, claims the Northern Irishman, and would not be surprised if Gerrard won a second Premiership title with Rangers come May.
Speaking to the Daily Record, Lafferty explained: “If Steven comes in, I wouldn’t rule out him getting the team to hit the ground running.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if he gets them up there challenging again and fighting for the title this season. Seriously, I wouldn’t be shocked if he won it. He’ll come in expecting to win it.

“He won’t settle for second place. He won’t be thinking, let’s close the gap on Celtic and Hearts and maybe finish a few points off.
“I know him and I’ve played under him. He’ll literally come in and think he can win the league this season. That’s the type of person he is. He’s full of confidence and belief in his own ability. And that’s what the fans want.
“No manager is going to come in and say they can’t win the title. But making that change now will be a massive lift for everyone at Rangers on and off the pitch.
“Especially knowing that he’s coming to win the title in his first season. Not to get closer to Celtic or Hearts, but to go and win it.”
Rangers will not win the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership title
Lafferty is clearly getting mixed up with real life and his FC 26 career mode because Rangers will categorically not win the league this season.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola could take charge from now until May and they would still finish second at best.
Gerrard will no doubt get a rise out of the current failing Rangers squad, but it won’t stretch to the point where they become realistic challengers to Celtic.
The Hoops are not at their best, Lafferty is correct about that. However, Celtic will not relinquish a nine-point lead over their Glasgow rivals.
The gap may close somewhat but Rangers should focus on beating Hearts to second, not usurping Celtic.
