Kyogo Furuhashi left Celtic to join Rennes in a shock £10m January transfer window move.

The Japanese striker decided to leave Celtic for Ligue 1 as Kyogo tried to force his way back into the Japan national squad.

To be fair to him, despite Kyogo’s lack of first-team minutes for Rennes, Hajime Moriyasu included the former Celtic striker in his squad to face Bahrain and Saudi Arabia over the next seven days.

However, it seems that whilst Kyogo’s Japan career starts to take off again, his future at Rennes seems to becoming more uncertain as the season goes on.

Rennes searching for a new striker as Kyogo’s Celtic exit worsens

According to reports in France, it seems that Rennes are looking for a new striker for the coming season as Kyogo continues to struggle for game time.

Jeunesfooteux reports that Rennes boss Habib Beye wants a ‘higher-calibre striker’ and are looking at €35m rated Nice forward Evann Guessand.

The report also predicts that Kyogo could, in fact, leave the French club after being labelled as a ‘casting mistake’ by Rennes.

The report goes on to say that it wouldn’t be a surprise if the former Celtic hero didn’t ‘last long in Britanny’.

Kyogo has struggled for regular game time at the French club since leaving Celtic in the summer and once a key man at the Parkhead club, the Japan striker’s fall from grace has been stark.

A hattrick against Dundee in only his second appearance for Celtic immediately warmed Kyogo to the Hoops support.

As for Rennes, until he can force his way into their first-team plans, it looks like Kyogo is another player who is realising that life after Celtic is not always great.
