With only two games left to go in the league, Celtic are still looking to rack up the goals. This morning I told how Callum McGregor’s 81st-minute goal against St Mirren helped us surpass Brendan Rodgers’ Invincibles league goal tally of 106 in 2017.
The team can also equal the Lisbon Lions’ tally of 111 league goals Jock Stein’s team scored in season 1966/67. But only if we score four goals in our remaining two league games against Hibs on Wednesday night and Aberdeen on Saturday.
Kyogo was asked if he thought the team could match the legendary Celtic team’s goal haul. Whilst he admitted it would be nice, the Japanese striker recognised the status of the Lions and he said he wants to see his picture up on the wall beside them one day.

Kyogo said [Football Scotland], “We need four more goals to match that record. Can I score four more? I don’t know if I can do it! But as a team, I believe it is achievable in two games. I know there is a lot of history at this club and a lot of great achievements, from great teams like the Lisbon Lions.
“Teams like that one are the reason the club is where it is today and it’s the reason we are all here today. You see the pictures on the walls around the stadium and you hear a lot about the great history they made.
“I will be glad if one day my picture is on the walls as well, but there are many things I need to do before then. That’s got to be my focus. It would be nice to get to the record, but if we want to enjoy such a moment we need to do well in training and produce performances in the matches.”
Kyogo’s reply is just typical of the Celtic striker’s attitude towards the club. Kyogo has embraced Celtic from day one. The fact he wants his name to be recognised with legends of the club is a boost for the supporters. Because to reach that kind of status, he will need to contribute to Celtic’s history for more than two seasons.
Of course, as Kyogo recognises, he has a long way to go before he can see his picture up on the walls with players like Jimmy Johnston and Billy McNeill. And whilst he may never be held in such esteem as those iconic figures, he has still captured the hearts and minds of the Celtic fans in the short time he has been at the club.
But for now, Kyogo is focused on helping Celtic improve our current performances in the run-up to the Scottish Cup Final in June. If he helps us seal the treble, he will take a huge step towards seeing his long-term ambition of his picture being placed in the Celtic Park corridors.
