Celtic fans are desperate to forget Wilfried Nancy’s spell at the club after a disastrous spell that put the Parkhead club’s title defence in peril.
Nancy was sacked by Celtic after defeats to St Mirren, Rangers, Dundee United and Motherwell and, as it stands, is still looking for work
But as a debate raged online about the quality of MLS coaches after West Brom sacked Eric Ramsey, USA legend Landon Donovan spoke up and appeared to defend Nancy after his disastrous Celtic spell.
What do you think is the main reason Wilfried Nancy couldn’t buy a win as Celtic manager? 🤔
The stats are damning…
Donovan said on X, “Need to chime in here because everyone seems to be missing the point. These are very good coaches.
“They just made really poor decisions to take these jobs in the middle of the season with no prep, no preseason, no ability to change the roster, etc.
“Getting immediate results with a new team requires a unique skill set that very few coaches possess.”
The tweet that sparked Landon Donovan’s defence of Nancy’s Celtic spell
When journalist Tom Bogert announced that The Baggies had sacked Ramsey, X account American Ultras Talk said, “Wilfried Nancy lasted 8 matches at Celtic.
“Eric Ramsay lasted 9 matches at West Brom. If you wonder why most USMNT fans usually don’t want a manager from MLS hired, this is why.
“The quality of players in MLS has improved a lot recently, the same now has to happen for managers.”
There is no doubt Nancy and Ramsey’s spells in Scottish and English football have damaged the reputation of coaches emerging from the US.
Nancy not only severely hampered Celtic’s chances of defending the title, the Frenchman and possibly other US based coaches, are unlikely to be considered for a top job in Scotland again.
Celtic’s next manager
Strangely, the chat surrounding who could become Celtic’s next manager this summer has quietened down.
A lot of chat has surrounded Jens Berthel Askou’s potential of becoming the Bhoys’ boss, but as far as strong links are concerned, there really has been nothing.
But for now, Celtic are focused on getting the Europa League out of the way so that they can fully concentrate on the league defence.
