Lazio’s fortunes have changed ahead of their trip to Celtic Park next week after they secured an important midweek victory.
As we covered over the weekend, things are not great at the Serie A side right now. Maurzio Sarri’s men were greeted by boos at full-time in their weekend draw at home to AC Monza. At that stage, they sat 15th in the table having taken four points from their first five league matches.
Now, things are looking a bit better for Lazio after they secured their first home win since May. Torino were downed at the Stadio Olimpico with Matias Vecino and Mattia Zaccagni grabbing the goals.
From the sound of things, it was an improved display from the Biancocelesti and at a much-needed time. Former Chelsea boss Sarri certainly saw some positives, even if the match wasn’t always easy.
“It was a difficult evening with many difficulties,” he said, as reported by Football Italia. “Not least that of facing a not-easy team. We had an orderly first half and in the second half we put in the quality, it was a high-level match.”
“They were a solid team. The backline was put under little pressure other than with dirty balls. The team allowed this solidity. After the first goal, the guys then loosened up also from a competitive point of view.”
As we told you yesterday, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is reading very little into Lazio’s recent form. Rodgers reckons there could be plenty of factors at play at this early point in the season. It’s exactly the kind of view you’d expect him to have.
We will get a better indication of the state of Lazio this weekend. They face AC Milan at the San Siro on Saturday evening before setting off for Glasgow.
It’s going to be no easy task against a side from one of Europe’s best leagues. But it’s also the kind of match we have to be winning if we want to make an impact at the very top level.
