Lewis Morgan gives take on how Celtic would do in MLS amid Wilfried Nancy debate

Lewis Morgan had an unremarkable two years at Celtic.

Signed by Brendan Rodgers from St Mirren, he struggled to make an impact on the first-team, being loaned back to St Mirren and then Sunderland, who were in League One at that time.

Neil Lennon gave him a chance as a makeshift striker in the 2019-20 season, and after goals against AIK and Rennes in Europe, he started the League Cup final against Rangers.

But this start was to be his last at Celtic, as he fell back down the pecking order and eventually moved to MLS, where he has been since.

The topic of MLS vs SPFL is relevant at the minute, given Wilfried Nancy’s expected arrival at Celtic. So how would the Hoops do in the USA?

Lewis Morgan on how Celtic would do in MLS

Morgan has now made almost 150 MLS appearances for Miami and his current side, New York Red Bulls.

His strong form last year earned him a surprise call-up for Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad at EURO 2024.

Speaking on Fozcast, he was asked about the standard of football (or soccer) in the USA, and he brought up the big two in Glasgow for comparison.

He said: “The easiest thing for me to compare to is the Scottish league, because I know that more.

“When I first got here, I was like, ‘Celtic and Rangers would just win every game’. Either they’d win every game, or go unbeaten in the league.

“Now, you look around the league, and I’m like, ‘they might not beat them, if they go away there, they’d probably lose there’…

“I think, if they go away to LAFC, they’ve got Heung-Min Son, [Denis] Bouanga, [Gareth] Bale came off the bench in the cup final.

“So the easiest one for me is when people compare it to the Scottish league. Where is it?

“I do think that Celtic and Rangers would be [two] of the best teams each year to win. Hearts are doing amazing right now, they’re flying, but it put it above that.

“It’s not at the level of the Premier League, but I do think that, in my limited knowledge, I’d say that most of the teams here are probably top half [English] Championship.”

Is MLS an appropriate league for Celtic to be taking managers from?

Celtic ties to MLS

Two of Celtic’s current players have played in MLS – Alistair Johnston, who played under Nancy, and Auston Trusty, whose form at Colorado Rapids earned him a move to Arsenal.

Ex-Hoops boss Ronny Deila is an MLS winner, delivering a play-off win for New York City in 2021.

Remember Odin Thiago Holm? Remarkably, he is still contracted to Celtic, and has made just five appearances since joining LAFC in January.

The Celts could be about to dip back into the MLS market in January, with Diego Rossi and Wessam Abou Ali both being tipped to follow Nancy to Glasgow.
