The penalty or the decision to not award Rangers a penalty against Celtic in the League Cup final continues this week as the Ibrox club’s fallout over the defeat in Hampden continues.
A lot of the debate has centred around why VAR didn’t get involved in the incident, especially as Celtic went on to beat Rangers and lift the League Cup.
Former SFA referee Bobby Madden believed Celtic should have been penalised and said he was ‘amazed’ that it hadn’t been identified by the VAR team.
It seems that may not be correct if the match commentary is anything to go by.
Premier Sports confirms one thing about VAR on Celtic vs Rangers penalty shout
The debate has raged over the last couple of days as to why VAR didn’t have a look at the penalty call.
But it seems that the Premier Sports commentator, Rory Hamilton, confirmed at the time that the video referee did take a look at the incident.
Hamilton said on Premier Sports commentary, “We’ll just give an indication of how close that was to being contact in the box from Liam Scales.
“Sorry to interrupt. VAR did have a look at it and was satisfied that it was a free kick.”
So VAR did look and was satisfied that the correct decision was made. That clears that up.
What’s been said about the Celtic vs Rangers League Cup penalty claim
Krid Boyd lost the plot as he demanded, “I would want to get to the bottom of why the VAR didn’t intervene because it’s not good enough.”
Des Roache and Steve Conroy, two former SFA referees made a bizarre claim that John Beaton made a ‘clear and obvious error’ even though the incident was ‘unnoticed’.

Celtic defender Liam Scales said it wasn’t a penalty but felt as though he needed to see it again to confirm.
And Rangers boss Philippe Clement called the decision not to award a penalty against Celtic ‘weird’.
At least the Premier Sports commentator confirmed one thing, VAR did get involved and thought John Beaton was correct. End of discussion.
