Liam Scales shares what he is ignoring this summer amid pressure from Celtic fans

Celtic are busy in the transfer market this summer.

Defensively, they have signed Kieran Tierney on a five-year deal to be the club’s first choice left-back, while Hayato Inamura has also joined.

Inamura cost just £250k from Albirex Niigata and can play either at centre-back or left-back, with Brendan Rodgers pleasantly surprised by his Cork City debut display.

The Hoops also have Cameron Carter-Vickers and Auston Trusty in central defence, as well as Irishman Liam Scales.

Scales on his main focus this pre-season

And speaking to the Daily Record, Scales is ready for another season of battling for regular starting spots, most likely again with Trusty.

But he isn’t thinking about whether Celtic sign another centre-back and what that could mean for his opportunities going forward.

Scales said: “It’s a big club so you expect them to sign a player almost for each position every summer. That’s just part of it. That’s how it’s been for the last few years so I wouldn’t be thinking about that at all.

“I’m focusing more on getting sharp and fit and ready to fight for that jersey for that first game of the season.

“I can’t wait. All the training we’re doing is leading into that first day. We want to start the way we finished the league last season.

“We want to win the league again, that’s the goal. We also have that big Champions League qualifier ahead of us too and it’s massive for us to play in that competition.

“We’re already really focused on that. I feel we have so much to look forward to and we’re all eager to get started.”

Scales gets plenty of flak from Celtic fans

Scales played 45 minutes of the pre-season friendly defeat to Estrela da Amadora on Saturday and was thrown under the bus by Dane Murray.

Murray’s recklessness left a huge gaping hole in Celtic’s defence, which Estrela profited from by scoring the winning goal of the game.

Scales was left isolated at the back, yet he was the player who received a lot of the flak from Celtic fans reacting on social media.

The defender probably has more detractors than fans amongst the Celtic fanbase, as he seems to be the easy scapegoat.

He may not be thinking about potential incoming transfers or competing for a first-team spot, but he’ll certainly be focusing on improving his own performances to appease the fans.
