Celtic have had plenty of players who have played and excelled in the Champions League over the years.

Even looking at Celtic’s five best results in the Champions League the Hoops have had the likes of Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton, Shunsuke Nakamura and Lubomir Moravcik all make their mark on the tournament.

However, only two players have left Celtic to go on and win the tournament with other clubs this century. Larsson did it with Barcelona in 2006 and the Swede is widely regarded for turning around that famous night against Arsenal.

However, there is another Hoops hero who left the club more recently and managed to lift the big cup back in 2019 and Arne Slot has named him in his Dream Champions League XI.

Celtic hero Virgil van Dijk named in Liverpool boss’ dream Champions League team

Virgil van Dijk was recently one former Celtic player ranked as one of the current best 100 players in the world. After helping Liverpool win the Champions League in 2019, the Dutchman was named in Slot’s dream team made up of former winners of UEFA’s flagship tournament.

Slot told Amazon Prime Video Sport, “Virgil needs to be there. He has had a lot of impact on this club. I think when he and Allison came in, was the last step that the team needed to make.

“An impressive centre-back, really good in the air, so he has all the attributes that the centre-back should have.

“So he’s for sure in it.”

Virgil van Dijk’s Celtic record

The big Dutchman arrived at Celtic in 2014 and in two seasons at the club, picked up two league titles and one League Cup.

But whenever van Dijk pulled on the green and white Hoops, Celtic rarely tasted defeat.

Now entering the latter years of his career, van Dijk will always be looked upon fondly by the Celtic support as the one player who just strolled it in Scotland.
