Luis Palma makes surprise choice for the Celtic goal he treasures the most

Luis Palma is a player who has probably frustrated the Celtic fans the most last season.

The £3.5m signing from Aris was signed as a replacement for Jota and probably, rather unfairly, gets compared to the popular Portuguese winger.

However, Palma enjoyed a blistering start to his Celtic career where, up until December, he was a mainstay in the side.

With eight goals and nine assists in that period, the Honduran was starting to show why Celtic paid £3.5m for his services.

Two goals in the Champions League announced Palma’s arrival on the big stage but, strangely, the winger doesn’t list his strikes against Atletico Madrid or Feyenoord as his favourite in the green and white Hoops.

Palma’s ‘beautiful’ goal is not his favourite

Whilst Palma admits the goal he scored against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League was special, it was in the SPFL that he holds his most cherished memory of hitting the back of the net.

Palma said [RadioHouse Media via The Scottish Sun], “The Champions League was incredible. You feel a difference for those games.

“There is pressure but that was my dream when I was growing up.

“I told my mum, ‘Someday I am going to play in the Champions League’.

“I will never forget the goal against Atletico Madrid.

“When the ball fell to me in the box, I didn’t see any of my team-mates . . . I didn’t see anyone!

“I only saw the goal frame and when the ball rebounded off the post to go in, it was beautiful.

“It was the best goal I have scored in terms of the sensation and feeling that I got from it.

“But my favourite goal from last season was against Ross County when I scored from outside the box.

“I am very grateful to the Celtic fans for their support.”

Indeed, the game Palma is referring to is the 3-0 win at Dingwall back in November where his 78th-minute strike helped seal an important three points on the way to the title.

That sparked a two-month period where the Honduran was in great form as he contributed eight assists and three goals to keep the title charge on track.

Palma’s form then fell off a cliff but he did get back to his best for the top-six split dispute not featuring in the final 2-1 SPFL Glasgow Derby win over Rangers.

The 25-year-old will be itching for the new season to start up and get back to the player he was in the first half of last season.
