Luke McCowan has revisited his comments about Celtic being the best team in the country earlier this season.

Though controversial at the time, it has turned out to be a true β€œI always win things in my second year” moment, with Celtic now standing as league and cup double winners.

McCowan said it after scoring the only goal in Celtic’s 1-0 win over Stuttgart in Germany at the back end of February.

Now in May, he and his teammates can reflect on the season as champions.

Luke McCowan: I’ll stick by controversial Celtic comment

McCowan told Celtic TV: β€œThe reason I said that is because I’ve got that much belief in this group.

β€œI’ve trained with all the boys every day and I’ve played in this league for so many years.

β€œI know there’s amazing teams in the league and amazing players in the league. I’ve just got more faith in my team, my squad, my team-mates and the staff than I do anybody else.

β€œAnd I’ll stick by that. It’s obviously results-based, and that’s why people then gave me stick, because we hadn’t done it.

β€œBut I knew if we got ourselves going and firing in the right way that we would retain the title, and that’s exactly what we did.

β€œSo it’s a credit to all the players and staff for helping me get out of that, or get me through that sentence, and have the backing on it!”

On his own performances, he said: β€œIf I’m being harsh on myself, I featured a lot, but I know I’ve got more.

β€œI’ve had big moments throughout the season, but if it’s just something throughout the games on the wider scale. I think I’ve got to try and contribute more.

Is this Celtic side underrated because domestic success feels routine?

β€œEven when I first came in here, the team were flying. They were getting results. Week in, week out, we were winning 5-0 and 6-0 some games, and you were able to contribute then and get goals and assists.

β€œBut I think if I’m being a harsh critic on myself, if I want to be a starter at this club and play constantly then I need to contribute more.

β€œThat’s my aim for next year, to push myself and everybody in my position to the max and try to play as many games as I can.”
