Marcelo Saracchi has now been rewarded for his encouraging Celtic form

Celtic fans had absolutely no idea what to expect from Marcelo Saracchi when he signed.

Boca Juniors allowed Celtic to loan the Uruguayan left-back for the season to give Kieran Tierney some much-needed cover.

Tierney, of course, was seen as the automatic starter given his quality and experience playing for Arsenal in the Premier League over the last six years.

But Tierney has had niggly fitness and injury problems which have allowed Saracchi to rack up a good number of minutes.

And it’s safe to say he’s been impressive for the large majority of his time at Celtic so far, linking up well with winger Sebastian Tounekti.

Celtic loanee Saracchi recalled to the Uruguay squad

Now, Saracchi has been rewarded for his promising Celtic form with a recall to the Uruguayan national team squad for their October international fixtures.

Saracchi actually has nine caps to his name, with his debut coming way back in 2018 as a substitute for ex-Celtic defender Diego Laxalt.

However, he hasn’t been called up since March when he featured on the bench against Lionel Messi’s Argentina.

Now he has the chance to stake his claim as Uruguay’s first choice left-back against the Dominican Republic and Uzbekistan this month.

Have Uruguay qualified for the 2026 World Cup?

Saracchi was a regular for Uruguay across 2024 when he made five appearances, all of which came in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

But he wasn’t in the Uruguay team that clinched qualification for the World Cup last month with a 3-0 win over Peru.

Former Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is the head coach of the nation and led them to just four defeats in 18 qualifying matches.

They finished fourth in the CONMEBOL qualifying table behind Argentina, Ecuador and Colombia, with Brazil propping up in fifth position.
