Martin O’Neill’s interim spell at Celtic has been rather enjoyable.

In fact, aside from that night in Denmark, it’s been perfect, and a notable improvement from how things were going under Brendan Rodgers.

In a time of Celtic fan protests and tensions over the board, O’Neill has unified the support by returning to the club 20 years on from his departure.

Few of us saw this coming – and just as few saw Wilfried Nancy coming as his replacement. However, that’s what we’re getting.

O’Neill has been asked about his incoming successor, and told him of what he will find in the Celtic squad.

Columbus Crew boss Nancy will bring some members of his backroom staff over from MLS.

It’s a huge opportunity for the Frenchman, who comes in as a largely unknown figure on this side of the Atlantic.

Speaking to Sky Sports, O’Neill reflected on his interim spell ahead of its apparent conclusion on Sunday.

He said: “Hopefully, he’ll find a side that is bubbling with a bit of confidence, which is great.

“That’s a restoration of that from previous weeks, in that sense. But no, he’ll have a fair idea of what he’s coming into.

“He doesn’t need any guidance from me.”

Asked about his interim spell in general, O’Neill said: “I came up here, it’s been a whirlwind time, and probably, if you asked me if I’ve loved it? Yes I have.

“My face doesn’t always say that, but in terms of messages, there are more important things for the fans and the team to worry about, and that’s trying to win the game at Easter Road.

“Regardless of the result, ask me about this again on Sunday evening, and I’ll be able to give a proper answer.

“Have I enjoyed it? Yes, of course I have. Did I know that this was always going to be interim? Yes, of course, as well, too.

“Have I got used to the surroundings here at this minute? Not so sure, yet! Not sure about that, really strange from my days away back at Celtic Park.”
