Martin O’Neill delivers his verdict on Liam Scales’ performances for Celtic under Brendan Rodgers

One of the plus points for Celtic this season has been the performances of Liam Scales.

A prime example of a player taking his opportunities when it was handed to him because of unfortunate circumstances for others.

One of those players in that unfortunate circumstance was Cameron Carter-Vickers when he was injured at the start of the season.

Fast forward to the present and Celtic’s starting centre-back pairing is Liam Scales and Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Martin O’Neill is loving the rise of the Republic of Ireland international and how he has done ‘remarkably well’, as he told PLZ Soccer.

You could argue that the defining moment for the 25-year-old came during Celtic’s 1-0 win at Ibrox earlier on in the campaign.

Whilst summer capture Gustaf Lagerbielke struggled, the man next to him performed amazingly well and is now reaping the rewards for it all.

“Young Scales has come into the side and done remarkably well,” said O’Neill. “And Carter-Vickers is a big player for them.”

Centre-back signings

Whilst Scales has faired well and deserves praise for his performances, he might find that competition enters the Celtic building in January.

Nat Phillips’ loan spell at Celtic ends next month, whilst Maik Nawrocki has hardly been seen since his move to the club.

And then there is Lagerbielke, there is talk that those inside Celtic don’t rate him, so he is another one who could leave.

All in all, it might just open the door for Rodgers to bring in his own centre-back, which would mean some much-needed and reliable competition for the backline.
