Celtic enjoyed a resurgence in form when Martin O’Neill was the interim boss.

The legend returned after Brendan Rodgers’ shock Celtic resignation caused chaos at the Parkhead club, chaos that is still being felt today.

O’Neill quickly restored order and produced results as he rebuilt the confidence in a Celtic team that was clearly struggling for it in Rodgers’ final days as the Hoops boss.

However, after handing over the reins to Wilfried Nancy, Celtic’s results have crashed with crushing defeats to Hearts, Roma and now St Mirren in the Premier Sports Cup final.

As fans start to question Nancy after watching Celtic’s performance against St Mirren, O’Neill was asked if he would consider returning to the club if the call came again.

Martin O’Neill urges Celtic fans to back Wilfried Nancy

Nancy is under terrible pressure at Celtic as many fans now call for the Frenchman to be removed from the position.

And returning to his position at talkSPORT as a pundit, a Celtic fan took the opportunity to ask O’Neill if he would return to the club again, if asked.

O’Neill said on talkSPORT, “I again, I just reiterate what I said. I think you’ve got to give the man some chance, please.

“I know in this day and age results from the off are very, very important, and I know that, but I go back to my own experience again.

“I never won a game for but I think it was my 10th game before winning at Leicester.

“The crowd were baying for blood. So I know the feeling. I think just give it a chance and I know it was really disappointing yesterday to lose the cup final, but overall, just give the man a chance.

“You’re not supposed to lose at Celtic, that’s true, but it has happened. But they can fight back from that.”

Celtic’s results under Martin O’Neill

Celtic enjoyed some big wins under O’Neill, even if the football wasn’t always pleasing on the eye.

O’Neill won seven out of eight fixtures across three competitions which included beating Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup, Feyenoord in the Europa League and, coincidentally, St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership.

Is this the end for Wilfried Nancy?

Sometimes the football was a frustrating watch but O’Neill found a way to grind out results. That is something that Nancy must do starting at Tannadice on Wednesday night.

Because if he doesn’t, another phone call could be made to O’Neill quicker than he thinks.
