BBC reporter catches what Arne Engels did to Celtic boss Wilfried Nancy’s Hampden touchline ‘antics’

Wilfried Nancy was the most animated manager on the touchline Celtic fans have seen in a long time at the club.

Ange Postecoglou was renowned for publicly showing his displeasure if his Celtic players didn’t follow his attacking instructions to the letter during his tenure at the club.

However, more often than not, the big Aussie kept his composure in the Celtic dugout. As for Nancy, the Frenchman is a completely different kettle of fish.

What would your message be to Peter Lawwell and the Celtic board after that loss?

Jumping up and down, running the touchline and waving his arms, Nancy did everything he could to get his message across to his Celtic players during the St Mirren defeat.

And how Celtic’s record signing, Belgian internationalist Arne Engels reacted to that was not a good look for the player, or the Hoops boss.

How Arne Engels ignored Celtic boss Wilfried Nancy’s ‘hokey-cokey’ at Hampden

With the game tied at 1-1 and Celtic struggling to break down St Mirren, BBC reporter Amy Canavan shared what Engels did as Nancy was waving on the touchline to try and get the attention of the players.

Canavan said on BBC Sport Scotland, “Wilfried Nancy likes a wave.

“That’s the only way he seems to try and get the attention of his players, flinging both hands in the air like a poor attempt at the hokey-cokey.

“When he was trying to get the attention of Arne Engels, who inexplicably passed back instead of spinning in search of space, the Belgian refused to take note of his antics.”

If Engels flat out refused to listen to the manager during Celtic’s biggest game of the season when it was still there to be won, serious questions need to be asked of the player and of the command that Nancy has over the squad.

Wilfried Nancy admits Celtic players ‘questioning’ him is ‘totally normal’

The Celtic boss has directly addressed the fact his tactics are not working and how the players are reacting to them and Nancy, bizarrely, admits that the team are not fully confident of his methods.

Nancy said post-match, “Of course, the results matter. I have to see beyond the results. I have to see what we need to get a better and a complete performance.

“It’s totally normal that they are questioning a bit of me. But I showed that I can do better. I showed the direction I want to go. This is part of the job. I know where we are now, and where we want to go. This is clear. I really believe we are going to be able to click and move forward.

“Yes, patience. I know this isn’t their (the players’) job to be patient. I tell them that ‘I am still working. I know what we want to do.’”
