Kasper Schmeichel’s future between the sticks as Celtic goalkeeper has been up for debate over the past few days.
Schmeichel seems to be finished at the top level and the demand for Viljami Sinisalo to come in and replace him is growing.
Chris Sutton recalled how Martin O’Neill wasn’t afraid to make big decisions with his goalkeepers, and that should worry Schmeichel.
Who gets the nod in goal for this weekend’s game?
Tell us why in the comments
Martin O’Neill has history of dropping out of form Celtic goalkeepers
Sutton was at Celtic when O’Neill chose to drop Rab Douglas and then Magnus Hedman, as well as withdraw a contract offer for Javier Sanchez Broto after taking too long to sign it.
Writing in his Daily Record column, he said: “You can talk about Schmeichel having experience – but keeping the ball out of the net is more important.
“It’s a big call but O’Neill has always been ruthless when he’s had to be. In terms of goalkeepers, he brought in Javier Sanchez Broto in our time and dropped Rab Douglas and then Magnus Hedman.
“Broto himself was left crying for days when he took too long to sign the contract O’Neill offered and then pulled the plug.”
Kasper Schmeichel should fear the worst
If Schmeichel thinks he is immune to being dropped then he will need to think again.
As proved multiple times already, he isn’t afraid to change things up at half time or drop people entirely if they’re not up to standards.
You have £10m to spend on a new goalkeeper to replace Kasper Schmeichel…
Who do you pick?
Joel Mvuka is nowhere to be seen since his debut and while the goalkeeper position is more delicate, if he thinks the Hoops stand a better chance of winning with Sinisalo in goal, he will do it.
It’s a simple solution for the 39-year-old: prove that he is undroppable.
