Anfield was busy today as Celtic Legends took on their Liverpool counterparts, with more than 45,000 people in attendance.
A Celtic side including fan favourite names such as Artur Boruc, Emilio Izaguirre and Stiliyan Petrov started the charity encounter on Merseyside. As many as 4,000 Hoops fans made the trip, with tens of thousands also turning out in the home end to raise a fantastic amount of money for good causes.
Clips on social media showed the stadium in full voice singing You’ll Never Walk Alone prior to kick-off, with one of the players – Ramon Vega – sharing that he’d been told more than 45,000 would be heading through the turnstiles for a big day out during the international break.
At the time of publishing, Liverpool are 2-0 up in the encounter after goals from Steven Gerrard and Mark Gonzalez. But today is not really about winners or losers, more about the good causes that are set to benefit.
A full 100% of the proceeds raised will support a range of Celtic FC Foundation’s and LFC Foundation’s programmes, including schools, inclusive sports, social action, health and wellbeing, and food poverty. So it’s pleasing to see so many engaged with the fixture and turning out.
It was also a great day for some of these former Celtic stars to reunite with teammates and the support. Joe Ledley, Mikael Lustig and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink were all among those taking part, all of whom would no doubt cherish the opportunity to pull on the Hoops one more time.
The whole event was a fantastic way for the club to spend the international break, with Ange Postecoglou and the vast majority of his first-team squad getting a well-earned break before the final, crucial part of the season.
Well done to everyone involved and all the fans spending their cash to support the charities!
