Celtic made an interesting call with their goalkeeping department in the summer.

When Joe Hart retired, those gloves needed to be filled, and Brendan Rodgers turned to a man he knows very well.

The Celtic manager worked with Kasper Schmeichel during their days at Leicester City, including winning the FA Cup at the expense of Chelsea.

The 38-year-old, son of the legendary keeper Peter, has had a stellar career, including that famous Premier League title win in 2016 in the colours of Leicester.

Schmeichel started his career at Manchester City – before they were flooded with the huge sums of money.

One man who was coming through with Schmeichel, at the time, was former England defender, turned pundit, Micah Richards, and he wanted to give his former teammate his flowers.

Back in December, Celtic beat Rangers in the League Cup final by downing their opponents in an enthralling penalty shootout.

Schmeichel also recently saved Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty for Denmark in the UEFA Nations League, before getting injured.

When Richards was asked which keeper he has played with that is ‘the best at saving penalties’, he gave Schmeichel his due rewards, as he told The Rest is Football Podcast.

“It’s a good question,” said Richards. “Maybe Kasper Schmeichel, he was really good at pens.”

Lineker, who would have watched Kasper at Leicester, added: “Kasper was really good at pens.”

Richards then continued: “Really, really good. He does all the housery when he was younger. But his agility is really good. I would probably say Kasper on this one.”

Schmeichel’s penalty record during his career

It’s been a career that has spanned nearly 20 years, and during that time, Schmeichel has faced 119 penalties.

That includes four whilst being the Celtic keeper, including two in the Champions League and that forgettable hammering of Borussia Dortmund.

But overall in the Denmark star’s career, from Manchester City to Celtic, this is how Schmeichel has performed when facing penalties.
