Kyogo Furuhashi left Celtic for Rennes in a deal worth £10m this week.

Rennes signed the Celtic hero almost immediately after the Hoops beat Young Boys in the Champions League last week.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is now about to face Aston Villa in the final group game of Europe’s elite competition and the rest of the season without his former talisman.

However, Michael Stewart has said that he feels Celtic are ‘pretty confident’ about replacing Kyogo and namechecks one player who has long been linked to the club.

Michael Stewart namechecks potential Kyogo replacement at Celtic

Stewart told The Scottish Football Social Club [48m], “I’ve got a feeling that, as much as I think, the discussions have been had a few months ago, I feel that they must be pretty confident of getting somebody else in.

“Whether it’s a Kvistgaarden from Brondby that’s coming in, I think they must feel pretty confident they’re going to replace him.

“And if they bring in somebody like him, he’s 22 years old and you’ve got Jota back, 25, on a five-and-a-half year deal, you’ve got to say to yourself, ‘That’s an awfully good bit of business’.”

Stewart then makes reference to Celtic’s 2023 summer transfer window and has been blown away at how Brendan Rodgers has managed to turn around that particular ‘disaster’.

“Kyogo is 30 years old now,” continued Stewart, “He wants another challenge, all of a sudden you’re thinking about Celtic 18 months ago when Brendan Rodgers came back in and the disaster they had in the transfer window, to now what they’ve started to do.

“And you go, ‘They’re in a far better position if they’re able to get in that number nine striker, they’re in a very good place’.

“It must be disappointing to see Kyogo going, who’s been a talisman for Celtic.”

Celtic fans will be confident of seeing new faces added to the Hoops’ first-team squad before the window closes on the 3rd of February.

With various names being linked to a Celtic transfer this month, Rodgers only has less than six days left to make strengthen his squad.
