Former Celtic defender Mikael Lustig could soon be back in Glasgow on European business.

The Swede’s new side Gent have been added to the Europa League fold after controversy in Belgium, and could face Rangers in Monday’s draw.

Gent are one of five potential match-ups that Steven Gerrard’s side can face. If the pair are drawn together then they will still both have to win their second round ties.

Gent face the Romanians Viitorul while Rangers will take on Luxembourg outfit Progres Niederkorn who defeated them back in 2017.

Lustig isn’t the only Scandinavian who could be back in Glasgow

Another one of Celtic’s favourite Scandinavians – Erik Sviatchenko – is also a potential opponent for the Ibrox outfit.

The 27-year-old is still playing for FC Midtjylland in Denmark who enter the tournament at the third round stage.

The likes of Lustig and Sviatchenko would have to wait until at least the Europa League group stages to make a return to Celtic Park. Neil Lennon’s side would have to be eliminated from Champions League qualifying and then make it to the Europa League groups before they were potential opponents.

There are plenty of recently departed Celtic men who could return to the club this coming season. The likes of Moussa Dembele and Timothy Weah are obvious Champions League examples while there are numerous more in the Europa League too.

Given the number spread around the continent, we’re likely to see a reunion or two this season.

Lustig and Sviatchenko will find out their fate at around 1pm on Monday afternoon. Celtic are in the Champions League draw at 11am and the Europa League draw at 11:25am.
