Motherwell still not over ‘sickening’ Celtic penalty call as Calum Ward reflects

Celtic’s penalty call against Motherwell briefly had the footballing world in meltdown.

A handball was given in the final passage of play in the game, allowing Kelechi Iheanacho to step up and win the game with the last kick.

This opened the door for Celtic to win the league by beating Hearts a few days later, destroying a narrative which had been built over several months about the Edinburgh side.

Motherwell were able to secure European football despite the hammer blow, but goalkeeper Calum Ward evidently still isn’t over it.

Calum Ward: ‘No words’ for Celtic penalty vs Motherwell

In a feature with Motherwell’s social media channels, Ward reflected: “There’s just no words for it to be honest.

“It’s hard to say anything because at the time, I think every player in that box doesn’t see anything wrong with what’s happened.

“You don’t see anyone claiming for it, you don’t hear any noise from the fans – it’s just like another throw-in.

“You see the referee put his finger to his ear and you are like ‘right, something is going on here, we just don’t know what.

“After seeing it back after the game it’s hard to see how he has come to that decision in such a short amount of time. Was it, what, 20 seconds he was over there?

“It’s one of the biggest decisions in the season to make, and you have made it in 20 seconds? You think making it so quickly means it’s so obvious.

“There is an angle that has come out recently from behind the goal that literally has the ball coming off the top of this head. So, it was even more sickening after the game.”

Many of a Hearts persuasion were incensed at the decision, with many even implying some kind of pro-Celtic conspiracy regarding the officials’ decision-making.

The baseless nonsense hasn’t reflected well on the Tynecastle club.

Hearts reactions to Celtic penalty call vs Motherwell

Leading the disgruntled was Hearts boss Derek McInnes, who blasted the decision as “disgusting” in a hot-headed interview after his side’s win over Falkirk.

Hearts hero Ryan Stevenson also wasn’t happy, labelling it a “disgrace” and “garbage”. Even Gary Lineker slated it.

The media fury reached such a temperature that referee John Beaton’s address was leaked, leading the official to need security around his home.

However, Chris Sutton has called out high-profile pundits for their hysteria, saying that their pro-Hearts agenda is clouding their judgement.
