There has been a lot of positive press going Mikey Johnston’s way after his loan move from Celtic to West Brom.

The Republic of Ireland winger has been enjoying a storming time in the West Midlands as he earns rave reviews for his performances in the English Championship for The Hawthornes club.

His six goals and one assist in ten appearances have propelled him to hero status with the West Brom fans and also earned him another call-up to John O’Shea’s national squad.

And as he earned his ninth cap for the Irish team last night, Johnston was picked in O’Shea’s starting lineup to face Switzerland.

Celtic fans will be familiar with Mikey Johnston verdict

The 24-year-old winger is often hailed as one of the best prospects to come from the Academy at Lennoxtown.

Unfortunately, Johnston has failed to command a regular starting spot at Celtic despite making his debut way back in 2018.

And as he shines in England, his reviews for his performance against the Swiss last night are an all too familiar tale for the Celtic fans.

Extra.ie: “In electric form for West Brom though that failed to replicate this evening. When he did get to the end-line, his crosses and cut-backs tended to find the wrong jersey.

“Had a great headed opportunity at the back post shortly before half-time. Did well to steal in front of the full-back but looked rather uncomfortable when meeting it with his forehead. The ball sailed over the corner of the crossbar. Was withdrawn soon into the second half.”

RTE: “REPLACED the injured Chiedozie Ogbene in the starting XI and saw plenty of the ball but was forced down blind alleys by a Swiss side who had clearly done their homework about his threat.”

Irish Sun: “The home side were bright in the opening exchanges and looked to cash in on Mikey Johnston’s pace as the tricky winger threatened on the break, though no gaping openings were found.”

Irish Independent: “Energetic at left wing but lacked end product in the final third. Should’ve done better when he sent a first-half header wide. Made way for Adam Idah.

Mikey Johnston – Always willing but couldn’t get his header on target and subbed before the hour.”

As I said, an all too familiar tale about a player who promised a lot at Celtic but ultimately failed to deliver.

There is no doubt that Johnston is a good player. There is also no doubt that wherever he does end up next season it won’t be at Celtic.

What Johnston’s last two loan spells have proved is that the winger has the ability to succeed, he just doesn’t have what it takes to make it at Celtic.
