Scottish Professional Football League chief executive Neil Doncaster has hit out at Celtic supporters and accused them of forcing Peter Lawwell out of the club.

Lawwell announced that he would be resigning as Celtic chairman at the end of the year, which has been celebrated by supporters.

In his statement, the 66-year-old claimed that he had received a number of threats from supporters, which had given him no choice but to step down.

Dermot Desmond and Michael Nicholson paid tribute to their long-associated colleague, who has been involved with Celtic across the last 18 years.

Now, Doncaster is the latest to chime in and take a pop at the supporters.

Neil Doncaster on Peter Lawwell exit

Doncaster has promised to clamp down on the disarray between the Celtic board and supporters.

Speaking about Lawwell’s exit, he told The Herald: “Peter’s departure is a damning indictment on the behaviour of a very small number of supporters that someone who has been so pivotal to Scottish football for almost a quarter of a century has felt compelled to step down for the sake of his family’s safety.

“Peter has been one of the pre-eminent driving forces in the growth of the SPFL and his achievements speak for themselves.

“The fact that he has felt that he has no choice but to step aside from the club he loves is enormously disappointing.

“This very sad episode merely highlights the need to take a very robust line on the part of the football authorities and others in dealing with the small minority of people who behave in an unacceptable manner in relation to Scotland’s national sport.”
