Celtic boss Neil Lennon was questioned by journalists today on comments he made recently about the ‘mitigating circumstances’ surrounding this season at the club.
Prior to the mid-week clash against Aberdeen, Lennon told media outlets such as The Scottish Sun: “I don’t think it’s unfair or unrealistic, but we’ve had mitigating circumstances throughout the campaign, some of which I can’t divulge publicly.”
It’s fair to say that went down like a lead balloon with a Celtic support that has heard nothing but excuses from the manager and the club this season.
Why even allude to secret goings-on behind the scenes if you cannot comment on them? That was the question many were asking.
It was another soundbite we could have done without.
Invited today if he could shed any more light on what he meant, due to the fan response, Lennon replied firmly in his press conference [YouTube]: “No. No, some things have to remain in house.
“There have been all kind of different episodes that have affected players one way or another, and the squad.”

It’s sad for me personally that I’ve come to the point where Lennon press conferences are an endurance test rather than something to look forward to and gain information from.
If he’s not making outright poor excuses, he’s alluding to circumstances that absolve him of all responsibility this season.
That he couldn’t expand in the slightest one what he said earlier in the week is no surprise. There’s less consistency in his media comments than our form this season. Which is saying a lot, as we know.
The sooner we get transparency and truth at Celtic, the better.
