Mohamed Elyounoussi could be in trouble with Neil Lennon after he appeared to be caught looking at his phone during Celtic’s 4-1 loss to Sparta Prague in the Europa League.

Cameras seemed to pick up the attacker taking a brief look at his phone whilst watching the game in the stand after being substituted. Is fair to say that Lennon wasn’t happy about that.

“He better not have been” Lennon said, whilst being interviewed by BT Sport after the game. “That’s something I’ll deal with.”

Former Hoops striker wasn’t impressed

It is fair to say that Chris Sutton wasn’t impressed with Elyounoussi. He criticised the player after the incident was highlighted by BT Sport.

“That’s a selfish, self-centred, egotistical individual who doesn’t seem to care about the rest of his teammates. Totally unacceptable” Sutton said (BT Sport HD 3, 05/11/20, 22:18).

It will be interesting to see what happens next with Elyounoussi. After all, he has been one of Celtic’s better players this season.

Yes, he probably shouldn’t have been looking at his phone but there are worse things that a player can do – like get sent-off for example. At this moment in time Neil Lennon needs everyone working together to ensure that the season doesn’t come off the rails completely.

Therefore, you imagine that the player will likely apologise to the fans and the club at some stage later today. Will he get a fine?

Player may be fined by club

That might be too much. Sutton did suggest that he be fined two weeks wages, perhaps that will be the case.

However, after that it is important that the Hoops come together to get the three points over Motherwell on Sunday. Elyounoussi could be a contender to play in that game, after all, he has been excellent for the Hoops recently, up until the Sparta game.

Release a statement on the club’s website later today, and be done with the matter, then move on to the next game. That is how Celtic should deal with the situation.

In other news, Chris Sutton questioned Celtic’s lack of desire in the loss to Sparta Prague.
