Celtic were comfortable winners at Victoria Park. However, it could have been a different game but for Barkas’ performance.
Whilst the Hoops were only 2-0 up Barkas made two excellent saves to deny Ross Stewart. The game could have been different had any one of those goals been scored. As a result, Lennon was delighted with Barkas’ performance.
“He looked a great goalkeeper today, he made some really good saves” Lennon said, whilst appearing on Celtic’s YouTube channel.
“Needed a game like that”
“He needed a game like that to get his Celtic career up and going, because he’s looked so assured and comfortable, he’s shown today what his qualities are” Lennon concluded.
Lennon is correct about Barkas needing a game like the one he just played in. Celtic fans haven’t seen him at his best so far. That is because for most of the games he has played in so far, Barkas has had very little to do.
That was not the case against Ross County. The best things about the two saves from Ross Stewart were how different they were.
Did well to make two excellent saves
The first was a touching away a header that seemed goal bound from inside the penalty box. He then saved a shot from Stewart who was in acres of space in the penalty spot, he got down well for that.
Last season’s goalkeeper Fraser Forster would have been proud of the saves Barkas made. Now that we can see what Barkas can do, it is easy to see why Neil Lennon was so keen to add him to the Celtic squad.
No doubt he will face more stern tests between now and the end of the season. After the performance against Ross County, Lennon and the Celtic support should have confidence in Barkas that he will be able to deal with any difficult fixtures.
