Neil Lennon has cooled talk of Celtic signing Sergio Quintero this summer, after admitting he’s never heard of the player.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Daily Record reported that the Hoops were in for the Ecuadorian youth international who impressed at this summer’s Under-20 World Cup in Poland.
Lennon was asked about the player in his BBC Sportsound post-Sarajevo interview.
“Never heard of him,” he said to bemused BBC interviewer Liam McLeod.
“That name has never come up. He’s not popped up on our radar”.
Lennon clearly isn’t after Quintero
The comments from Lennon make Celtic’s reported interest in the 20-year-old a little bit bizarre. The Hoops have also been linked with Quintero’s international teammate Jose Cifuentes in recent weeks so it may be possible that some journalists have got their wires crossed.
The club don’t exactly need another central-midfield option given their current depth and recent capture of Luca Connell. Although Lennon did recently say that he would still like to strengthen the position.
It will be interesting to see if anything develops with Cifuentes in the coming weeks. But one thing’s for sure – a move for Quintero looks unlikely.
