Neil Warnock wants to go toe to toe with Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title.

Fans will think that the English gaffer would obviously choose bitter rivals to do so. However, this would be a mistake on their part.

Warnock has told the Edinburgh Evening News that he wants to choose a team outside the Glasgow divide to do it with.

Hearts and Hibs fans might be watching their football from behind their couches in a few years.

One wrong move by their current coaches could see Warnock rock up at their gaff.

The veteran English coach wants to take charge of one of the Edinburgh divide in future.

Warnock, calling himself an “underdog”, wants to take Celtic’s throne at the top of Scottish football.

He told the EEN: “I’ve always thought: ‘I wish I could get a club up there and get a team to rival Celtic and Rangers.’

“I’ve always fancied one of them – Hibs and Hearts, it appeals to me up there with them being neighbours.”

Warnock is realistic though and understands the financial gulf outside Glasgow’s top two. Despite his playing style, Warnock’s potential introduction to Scotland would have fans talking.

Perhaps there will be added interest in the fact that he would have his eyes firmly on the title.

Will anyone burst the Glasgow bubble in future?

The top two have traditionally been the Glasgow rivals, especially in recent decades. Before and during the collapse of Rangers, other teams did manage a scalp or two in cup competitions. In the last few years, however, it’s been Celtic scooping all of the silverware.

Perhaps that’s been down to Brendan Rodgers and with Neil Lennon’s poor cup record the door is always open.

Only a few weeks ago Dunfermline tried their luck in the League Cup, failing after extra time.

Whoever does manage to beat Celtic in a competition rightly deserve their plaudits. But, as of yet, no one is really coming close.
