‘Never seen anything like it’… How Alistair Johnston has been left blown away by Celtic teammates

Alistair Johnston admits that what his Celtic teammates are doing this season has left him completely blown away.

The Celtic defender has played under Ange Postecoglou in a team where the Parkhead side were absolutely relentless in their pursuit of their rivals.

Johnston was a marauding right-back under the Australian as he picked up a treble in his first six months under Postecoglou.

But under Brendan Rodgers, the Canada international has flourished as he not only keeps the Celtic defence tight at the back but has also chipped in with goals upfront.

However, despite the success on the park Celtic have enjoyed under Rodgers, Johnston has been seriously impressed with how his teammates quickly put results behind them to focus on the next game.

Alistair Johnston hails ‘one of the best’ Celtic teams he’s worked with

Johnston told The Herald, “I think this team does one of the best jobs I’ve ever seen of putting a previous result behind them, whether it’s positive or negative, and focusing on the next one.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. It would be really easy to get complacent after winning X amount of games on the trot.

“But every single day the guys show up hungry as ever. That comes down to how the gaffer runs this team.”

Alistair Johnston says Celtic teammates are ‘nipping’ the heels for a starting spot

“We have a squad of close to 30 who are all top players,” Johnston continues, “If you take your foot off the gas, even a little bit, you will have someone nipping at your heels looking to take your spot.

“There’s always that competition and that takes away any complacency, which is important.

“Everyone is constantly chomping at the bit to get out there. Regardless of previous results, we will be ready for it.”

It’s great to hear complacency isn’t an issue at Celtic even though Rodgers has a commanding lead at the top of the table.

It would be so easy to let standards slip and relax knowing your biggest rivals are miles behind you.

But with so many talented players at the club and the fact that the Celtic manager wants to add even more quality, a drop in standards will mean players could lose their place in the starting lineup.

And as Luis Palma has found, it is very difficult to win that back.
