Nir Bitton’s logical plea to cancel international games won’t be heard by football authorities

Celtic’s Nir Bitton has come up with an idea which seems to make perfect sense – which is why the football authorities likely won’t go along with it.

Bitton has suggested, as reported by the Daily Record, that international football should be cancelled to protect the spread of Covid-19. Bitton knows what he is talking about, as he recently caught the virus whilst on international duty with Israel.

“Almost impossible to control”

“If it was my decision, I would cancel it. But it’s not my decision. There is nothing I can do about it. It’s almost impossible to control this virus when you go away with your national team and are mixed up
with a lot of players from different
countries and different bubbles” Bitton said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

It does seem ridiculous that only a few weeks after catching the virus on international duty Bitton is once against set to play for Israel again next week.

Celtic would have every right to be livid if Bitton once against caught the virus. As the player suggests, the virus is impossible to deal with when you are mixed with people from different countries and bubbles. Don’t forget, four Celtic players had to deal with Covid-19 issues after the last international break.

With so many countries back in lockdown, the logical thing is to postpone international football for a while. At least until the virus starts to lessen its grip.

Only play-offs could be played

If need be only play the Euro 2020 play-off games. Okay, that would affect Celtic, but at least those games are important. The Nations League games, for example, are a waste of time.

However, you would imagine that UEFA are eager to get matches played. Therefore, they won’t cancel any of the forthcoming fixtures, especially at such short notice.

Still, the logical and sensible thing to do would be to call a halt to international football for now. Play the games in a few months when things are hopefully getting back to normal.

That’s probably not going to happen though. From next week everyone at Celtic will be watching the intranational break closely in case of another Covid-19 outbreak.

In other news, Callum McGregor still revels in proving Celtic’s doubters wrong.
