Non-league club aim ‘World Class Basics’ gag at Celtic after January window

Celtic’s January transfer window did little to alleviate fan unrest.

The Celtic Fans Collective have organised a boycott of the team’s first fixture after the closure of the window, citing the club’s business among several motivations for the action.

The Hoops added five players during the window, all of which were on loan. Three of those additions came on Deadline Day, with the club now dipping into the free agent market for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The lack of a transfer fee spent has been an obvious stick to beat the club with, as Martin O’Neill is tasked with making up ground in the Scottish Premiership title race.

Now, even non-league clubs are having fun with it.

Celtic subject of ‘World Class Basics’ gag

Much of the current unrest is a knock-on effect from the summer transfer window, which caused even more anger among Celtic support.

Eventually, the unconvincing batch of signings led to the resignation of Brendan Rodgers, and all of the chaos that has ensued since.

Now, it’s led newly-founded Scottish club Inverness Thistle to poke fun at the club on their social media page.

“In a humorous post the club wrote on X: We are delighted to announce that we have managed to invest the same amount as Scottish Premiership side @CelticFC during the January transfer window.

“We managed to convince the club treasurer to free up £0.00. World Class Basics.”

…good for them.

Inverness are the newest iteration of the club initially founded in 1885, which merged with Caledonian to become the club that we now know as Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Thistle have no affiliation with the modern Inverness, and the timing of their founding was nothing to do with the ongoing financial issues at the Scottish League One side.

Operating in the North Caledonian League, Inverness Thistle play home matches at Ferry Brae Park in North Cessock.

Martin O’Neill on Celtic’s transfer window

What does the gaffer make of the window? In an interview with Chris Sutton this window, he discussed the done deals, as well as one that could be announced soon.

He said: “I am happy. I’m happy with what we’ve done. I needed to supplement the squad. I wanted to try and bring, if we can, like anything else, bring in a bit of quality.

“Getting quality at this time, with the sort of thing that you’re looking for, is still particularly difficult.

“We were speaking to Oxlade-Chamberlain, and I think he’s training at Arsenal at this moment, and Arsenal may even offer him a contract, If that’s the case then that’s really great.

“At 32, I was astonished that he hadn’t been picked off. I know he was talking about his difficulties out in Turkey, but someone of that sort of experience would have been great.

“It may still happen, because he’s out of contract but he will have a number of options, probably closer to home. But if that materialised, that would give us something.”
