Martin O’Neill and his coaching staff are keeping things ticking before Celtic make a permanent appointment.

But before the lights are out, Celtic could lose one of their coaching staff – Mark Fotheringham.

The 42-year-old has played a part in Celtic’s change in fortunes on the domestic scene, alongside O’Neill, Shaun Maloney and Stephen McManus.

But now Fotheringham’s services are wanted by Norwich City in the English Championship, and it hasn’t gone down well with the paying supporters.

Norwich City fans react to rumours they could appoint Celtic coach Mark Fotheringham

Norwich City recently sacked Liam Manning, with the club sitting in the relegation zone, only above financially ravaged Sheffield Wednesday, who have been deducted 12 points after entering administration.

But when Fotheringham’s name popped up as Manning’s possible replacement, it was met with frustration and anger from the Norwich supporters.

The Canaries wouldn’t have to pay Celtic compensation for Fotheringham, and that seemingly makes a push for the Dundee-born coach more appealing.

@Stuart_Dann made his feelings clear: ‘NO!!!!!’

Another Norwich fan who isn’t keen, as @garyrudland1 added: ‘That’s a NO from me 🤦‍♂️.’

@TheNorwichWay expressed his worries: ‘Don`t be daft – we`re predominantly a young European heavy squad. Nobody other than McLean will understand a word he says. Not at my club, thanks.’

@thomas__ncfc shared his thoughts in three words: ‘Delete this now.’

@Camerondownes9 noted what would happen if Norwich appoint Fotheringham: ‘Yeah, brilliant a relegation battle.’

@StretchThePress is being ‘reduced to tears’: ‘This is almost reducing me to tears. This is so bad.’

@Norfolk1902 thinks Norwich are a ‘shambles’ with this Fotheringham news: ‘He was club captain when we last went down to League One. He may be the manager as we next go down to League One. Club’s a shambles #notofozzy #KnapperOut.’

Celtic aren’t the only ones who want to ‘sack the board’: ‘Sack the board if he’s appointed #ncfc.’

And the theme continued, as @Mattsthespirit added: ‘We may as well pack it all in if there is any remote truth in this. #ncfc.’

@tfid23 stated what should happen if Fotheringham comes in: ‘If this happens, Ben Knapper should never work in football again…!’

Fotheringham’s coaching career

The former midfielder has only had one gig in the main hot seat, and that was his unforgettable five-month stint with Huddersfield Town.

But Fotheringham has been around Europe and part of several coaching set-ups, including now trying to help Celtic overtake Hearts at the top of the Premiership table.

This has been Fotheringham’s coaching career so far, with one job as the main guy, and the rest part of the set-up or as an assistant.
