Celtic forward Odsonne Edouard will have to be on his best behaviour this Thursday – as he is just one more booking away from a Europa League suspension.
The prolific Frenchman has seen yellow in both of our opening Group E matchdays. UEFA disciplinary law dictates that a third booking sees the affected player miss the following match as punishment – meaning that Edouard risks missing out on Rome if he’s booked this Thursday.
UEFA also say that any cumulation of cards are carried forward to the knockout stage of the competition and not wiped until the quarter-finals – meaning that Edouard could be walking a tightrope for some time.
Edouard has to be careful to avoid suspension
The Frenchman is probably the last man we would want to have in this position. He is our talisman in Europe and we currently don’t have anyone who would be able to do half as good a job in the circumstances.
What makes the predicament all the more frustrating is that both of Edouard’s bookings were self-inflicted and very needless. The 21-year-old was booked for an obvious dive in Rennes and then for stupidly kicking the ball away while we were 2-0 up against Cluj.
Thankfully his game isn’t built on tackling so he shouldn’t be restricted too heavily this Thursday. If he can just focus on not diving, not time wasting, and scoring goals we should all be very happy.
