Odsonne Edouard Olympics latest; dates, Celtic refusal rights, decision soon
Celtic supporters are set to get confirmation soon on whether or not Odsonne Edouard will be at the Olympics next month.
It was reported by The Scottish Sun in May that Edouard would definitely be included in the final squad. He was also named in Sylvain Ripoll’s 50-man pre-list submitted to the Olympic committee.
However, Celtic have to give approval for him to take part because the Olympics isn’t an official FIFA competition.
The French situation
Ripoll has had a serious problem putting together his final squad because a variety of clubs have not given permission for the players on the pre-list to be involved, L’Equipe reported yesterday.
GFFN has also reported that Monaco refused a number of their players due to participation in the Champions League qualifiers.
FFF President Noël Le Graët and Strasbourg owner Marc Keller are amongst the individuals trying to convince clubs to get on board, but they’ve been struggling. At one point there were doubts the French would even be able to be put a squad together.
However, Ripoll has now been granted permission to include players who were not initially on his pre-list. The French coach can now court players whose clubs would be more willing to play ball. He is now expected to name his final squad quickly, with a deadline looming on 30th June. [L’Equipe]
Edouard’s situation is complicated further by his apparent desire to leave the Bhoys this summer. There is just a year left on his contract and Celtic have to sell soon to realise any sort of fee on his exit. He is likely to be keen on becoming an Olympian as a proud international player.
It will obviously be very interesting to see what decision Celtic take. Given the stance of Monaco and other teams, we are well within our rights to refuse Edouard’s participation. The Bhoys must come first and next month’s Champions League tie is huge.
Why would Odsonne Edouard at the Olympics be a problem?
It’s all a matter of timing.
The French Olympic team is due to play Mexico on July 22nd, South Africa on July 25th and hosts Japan on July 28th.
Progression will be expected. The quarter-finals kick-off on July 31st, the semi-finals on August 3rd and the medal matches on August 6th/7th.
Celtic, as you’ll be aware, play FC Midtjylland in the Champions League on July 20th, with the second leg to follow on July 28th. Further qualifying rounds will be played throughout August.
Edouard, as a key Celtic star, should be involved in our matches for as long as he is contracted at the club. However, we know the politics of the situation, and player power, may not allow that to happen.
All eyes on the official announcement.
