Ex-Celtic winger Paul Slane has called out Brendan Rodgers’ conflicting messages after his ‘awful’ Honda Civic comment.
The Hoops put in a disastrous performance on Sunday as they were downed by Steven Pressley’s Dundee at Dens Park.
The Dark Blues were comfortable 2-0 victors as Celtic fell five points behind Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts and drew a blank for the sixth time this season.
Rodgers spoke to the press after the loss and said: “Listen, it’s not all linear and all smooth right the way through the season. That’s for sure. The challenge from the summer, now leading into here, where we lost a lot of firepower, a lot of goals out on the team.
“And there’s no way you’ll go into a race and be given the keys to a Honda Civic and say, I want you to drive it like a Ferrari.”
And that has left Slane disgusted as he slammed the comments on the latest Open Goal podcast.

Paul Slane blasts Rodgers ‘Honda Civic’ comment
Slane exposed Rodgers for his contradictory messages, pointing out that the Celtic boss was pleading for unity only a few weeks ago amid fan protests, and effectively said he needs to deliver with the squad he has after a poor summer window.
However, after defeat to Dundee, his Honda Civic one liner was a dramatic shift in tone. Slane said: “Awful. Awful comments. A few weeks ago, he kept going on through the summer about the recruitment and stuff.
“But after the window shut and Celtic were winning games, even though the fans were still protesting, he said: ‘We need to have unity now in the squad, this is the squad we’ve got.’
“So it’s almost like none of that talk was happening, but as soon as he gets beat, he brings it back up again. I hate that. It’s awful comments, it really is.”
Rodgers now under big Celtic pressure to deliver
Rodgers has enough in his squad to be winning the title again, despite the lack of quality recruitment and spending from the board in the summer.
The tables are beginning to turn. Rodgers was initially immune to criticism from Celtic fans, but results and performances of late have cast a spotlight on the Northern Irishman.
- Celtic haven’t scored in six of their 14 games this season
- They have won one of their last five matches
- The Hoops haven’t trailed the league leaders by five points in October since 2021
He is now under more pressure than he possibly ever has been before as Hoops boss, and now he faces a daunting trip to Tynecastle on Sunday.
