‘Outstanding’… Kris Boyd admits Celtic have a ‘luxury’ player who should start vs Dinamo Zagreb

The great thing about this Celtic team under Brendan Rodgers is the incredible strength in the depth the Hoops boss has at his disposal.

There is not a position in the Hoops matchday squad that fans could say would be significantly weakened should Rodgers look to make changes for Celtic’s Champions League game against Dinamo Zagreb.

The goalkeeping position has good cover with Finnish international Viljami Sinisalo waiting in the wings. Liam Scales, Auston Trusty and Cameron Carter-Vickers are a great defensive trio.

Greg Taylor and Alistair Johnston have good covering players in the fullback areas, Celtic’s midfield speaks for itself and the two strikers, Kyogo Furuhashi and Adam Idah, provide the firepower.

But it seems that Kris Boyd reckons Celtic have a player in midfield who could and probably should be in with a shout of starting against Dinamo Zagreb tonight as the former Rangers striker admits he’s been ‘outstanding’ this season for Rodgers.

Kris Boyd says Celtic midfielder Luke McCowan should start vs Dinamo Zagreb

When asked if he believed the Parkhead boss could rotate his squad with Celtic’s League Cup final against Rangers in mind, Boyd told Go Ballistic, “Yeah, I think he can. That was the debate last week, but I tell you something, you know somebody else who should be involved in that is Luke McCowan.

“His form has been outstanding for Celtic since he’s joined and he’s another one that could probably feel as if you know, I deserve a start, especially at this level.

Brendan Rodgers has got the luxury, shall we say, of being able to chop and change and bring in players whenever he wants.

“But I think Brendan Rodgers will look at this as an opportunity to go away from home, win a Champions League game and then deal with Sunday once it comes along.”

Kris Boyd hints at Rangers excuses for League Cup final vs Celtic

“You’ve got to remember Celtic play Tuesday at quarter to six,” continued Boyd, “It’s a couple of days, more or less rest on Rangers as well.

“Not that we’re getting excuses in already, wouldn’t be doing that, would we? But I think that it’s a good fixture for Brendan Rodgers, albeit it’s an away game in Europe. They’re always tough.

“But he will feel as if they can continue this run they are on ahead of what’s going to be a huge cup final on Sunday.”

The likelihood is that McCowan will start on the bench tonight and Rodgers will go with Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate and one of either Arne Engels or Paulo Bernardo.

The Celtic boss has preferred this starting midfield in all of his Champions League fixtures so far and there won’t be an appetite to change that anytime soon.

But McCowan is a great option to bring off the bench for Celtic and whenever called upon, he has never let Rodgers down and tonight won’t be any different.
